4 Questions to Ask a Prospective Roofing Contractor

Taking care to choose your roofer can help ensure your roofing project’s success, whether it’s for fixing a minor leak or replacing an old roof. Asking the right questions can help you narrow down your list of prospective roofers. In today’s post, local residential roofing contractor Dior Construction shares the important questions to ask before hiring a roofing contractor.

1. Are you registered and insured? Roofing contractors are required to have a license or to be registered in most states. In New Jersey, roofers are required to register with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. Working with a registered roofing contractor is your assurance that your project will comply with all building codes. While most roofing contractors offer insurance coverage to some degree, there are two types of coverage that you need to have: general liability insurance and workers’ compensation. They provide coverage for accidental property damage and workplace injuries, respectively.

2. Do you have manufacturer certification? If a roofer is offering products and residential roofing services from specific manufacturers, then they should be certified by the said manufacturers. This is your assurance that they will be using authentic products and that the finished roof will have full warranty coverage. Dior Construction is designated as a GAF Master Elite® contractor and is authorized to offer and install their wide selection of industry-leading roofing products, including complete roofing systems.

3. What is the scope of work? The prospective roofing contractor should be able to explain the scope of your project in clear and simple terms. This indicates understanding of your requirements, which can help prevent installation mistakes. Make sure that whatever you’ve discussed with your contractor — from materials to the number of installers needed for the job — is reflected in the written estimate.

4. How will you protect my property? Roofing work generates a lot of dust and debris. Your contractor has to have plans to manage waste and to prevent damage to your property. Their plans should include covering surrounding landscaping and using boards and drop cloths where there will be foot traffic during installation.
