A Gutter Preparation Checklist for Winter

Your home’s gutter system is one of the most important parts of your home, especially during the rainy seasons, since they keep your roof free of water by driving it away towards a safe location. They are just as important during the winter season which is why you want to ensure that they’re ready for the cold weather.

In this post, your residential roof repair expert, Dior Construction, shares a winter gutter preparation checklist you can easily follow.

  • Inspect Seams and Anchors. Try and see your seams and anchors and check if there are any signs of leaking. Also, it helps to ensure that your gutters are fastened properly to your home by securing it to the gutter spikes. To see if it’s secure, you shouldn’t see a gap between the fascia and the gutter.

  • Check for Structural Damage. Don’t automatically assume that everything is in order just because your gutters look fine. Inspect other parts of your home such as the exterior siding, foundation and roofing system for any signs of degradation like staining, rotting, and mold growth. If you notice these signs of damage, do not hesitate to contact your local gutter and residential roofing contractor to carry out inspections and repairs.

  • Remove Debris from Gutters. This is one of the most important things you’ll need to do when checking your gutters. Remember that debris can damage your gutters and your roofing system due to ponding water and flowing water into your home’s foundation. While this can be done on your own, we recommend leaving it to our professionals so that the job can be done properly, and safely. We also recommend installing gutter guards for added convenience and protection.
