Basic Winter Preparation Checklist

Winter is fast approaching. While it’s indeed the time to be jolly, the idea of a winter wonderland can be misleading. The season is rather notorious for dishing out unrelenting punishment on your home’s exterior from your roof down to your siding, so it’s best to tick the boxes on your preparation check list.

Here’s a winter-proofing checklist from your most trusted roofing contractor.

Roofs, Gutters, and Drains

  • Clean Your Gutters – Doing this can prove to be an impossible chore once snowstorms set in. While things are relatively calm during fall, make it a point to keep them free from clog-causing debris.

  • Check for Missing Shingles – Warped, damaged or altogether missing shingles are signs of deterioration, which means you need roof replacement—and soon. Inspect your shingles before winter fully arrives.

  • Seal Joints – Check all areas of your roof where water may leak in. You won’t be able to do this in the middle of winter, as inches of snowfall will cover your roofing system’s surface.

Windows and Doors

  • Check Insulation – Your windows are essential components of your home’s weatherproofing. As such, examine the weatherstripping around them for leaks. Doing this prevents precious heat from escaping your interior.

  • Replace Screen Doors With Storm Doors – You won’t need them during winter, nor will they do much to blunt the wrath of winter. On the other hand, storm doors will keep the weather out so you can stay warm and cozy indoors. This also applies to window screens.

  • Inspect for Cracked or Broken Glass – While they can be minor aesthetic issues, failure to attend to them can compromise your windows’ energy efficiency. Replace them as soon as you can and worry no more about heat loss.
