TPO and EPDM Roofs: Shared Benefits

When it comes to choosing your single-ply roofing membrane, you can pick between TPO and EPDM roofing. However, some have a hard time choosing between the two because they seem so similar to one another at first glance. This isn’t necessarily the case, as both have their own differences and shared benefits when it comes to cost, longevity and durability.

In this post, residential roofing contractor Dior Construction explains the overall benefits that come with TPO and EPDM roofs.

Cost

When it comes to cost, either TPO or EPDM roofing will suit your needs. This is because you’ll likely be spending almost the same amount to invest in a thicker membrane since both EPDM and TPO roofs will perform better and last longer if they are thicker.

Durability

Commercial and residential roofing services will tell you that both EPDM and TPO roofing have good durability. Since it’s made of rubber compound, EPDM roofs have properly tapered seams and detailed flashings that allow it to last up to 25 years and performs admirably in colder climates. TPO, on the other hand, has seam strength 3 to 4 times that of EPDM’s adhesive, making it another durable option for your consideration.

Longevity

While EPDM can last long so long as the overlapping seams are properly attached to one another, the overall longevity of TPO roofing is still undetermined. Since it’s a fairly new roofing product, most TPO membranes are only as old as 15 years. TPO is also a continuously experimental product, meaning they are all in their 2nd, 3rd and maybe even 4th generation when it comes to formulations. This makes the longevity of TPO roofing difficult to determine.
