What Is Roof Decking?

A roof is more than the asphalt shingles installation making up its exterior. Underneath it are layers of supporting structures that help keep your roof in good shape and contribute to the overall protection of your home. One important component of any roofing system is the deck.

A roof deck is called many terms: decking, sheathing or panels. However, they all mean one thing: the layer of plywood where shingles are actually nailed. Let our roofing experts at Dior Construction help you understand this vital part so you can take steps to help keep it and your roof well maintained.

Types of Roof Decking

For homes without ceilings, a residential roofing contractor might recommend a tongue and groove approach to the deck installation. The panel edges are typically carved resembling either a “tongue” or a “groove.” These two pairs slide into each other, creating a seamless connection.

The most common decking solution, however, is one that most homes built in the 70s use: plank sheathing. Planks are straightforward. Wide strips of plywood are nailed to the rafters and provide a space for individual shingles to be nailed to.

Roof Decks and Replacement

You don’t necessarily need to replace your decking during a roof replacement. However, depending on the extent of your damage, your residential roofing services might recommend it. During an initial assessment, a professional will “walk” on the deck to determine if it needs replacement. Older homes with a roof near or at the end of its life span will usually need a deck replacement as well.

Professional Services

If, for whatever reason, a roofer couldn’t access the deck from above, they might need to check it from the attic. This alone is usually enough to determine whether a replacement is needed. Once the old shingles are removed, any damaged planks are more easily spotted.

A roofing system is only as good as the decking that supports it. Our professionals at Dior Construction are your number one roofers in Bergen County, NJ, and nearby areas in New Jersey.
